Exotic Birdhouses
All of my birdhouses are made from at least 60% re-purposed exotic hardwoods.
This bird house is a bit different. The refurbished maple and poplar are quite old. The base section is actually a pier pile from Battery Wharf from Old Boston Harbor. You can see the incredible detail caused by the elements of years past. It dates back to 1646 which is incredible in itself. The concept of this design was based on minimizing waste of this precious material.
This birdhouse is special. It's made from 100% recycled, repurposed materials with the exception of nails and glue of course. The mahoganies, purple heartwood, wenge and marble wood (the perch) are from the rain forests of Africa and South America. The white oak and red woods (left and right mountainous-looking feature) are from the United States. These woods are so unique and beautiful in detail. I hope you enjoy viewing as much as I enjoyed creating.
This birdhouse is made from 90% recycled materials, mainly mahogany and pine. The perch and entryway are made from marblewood which is a very detailed and beautiful wood. Because of the level of detail in this one, it took longer to complete.
The next 5 Birdhouse images below are made from 100% repurposed vintage woods. I was told it comes from one of the oldest taverns in Connecticut. Made from two different woods, the front and back are made from vintage painted pine, estimated to be designed approximately 200+ years ago. The base and the roof shingles are made of poplar, also very old as you can see from the worm holes in both the base and the shingles. The poplar is actually from a very old floor board. Typically I wouldn't use poplar on a birdhouse, but the detail was so beautiful that I couldn't resist. I did take extra steps to preserve it.
I actually pulled out an old nail from the painted pine wall panel. Check it out on the Birth of a Birdhouse page. This one is one of my very favorite birdhouses.

These 4 birdhouses are really unique. They are made from repurposed mahoganies throughout the world as well as white oak, wenge, black walnut and sapele.
This birdhouse is made from 90% recycled pine and mahogany. The entryway is made from rosewood and the perch is marblewood.
